MCLB #3: SEEING LITERACY
TEDxDartmouth - Brian Kennedy - Visual Literacy: Why We Need It
What can visual literacy look like in terms of classroom use?
OMG Shakespeare is a series of famous Shakespeare plays that have been modernized by writers Courtney Carbone and Brett Wright from William Shakespeare's original works. The plays have been re-told in text messages, with the use of hashtags, emoji's and text that in the world of smartphones- students are sure to be engaged and critically understanding the classic play-works.source: https://www.yayomg.com/omg-shakespeare/

I love that you presented this information using PiktoChart. That was a really creative way to look at what visual literacy is. One of the parts of that, that stood out to me was "powerful" as one of the benefits of visual literacy. You probably noticed in my blog that I showed pictures from the civil rights and how events that occurred then connect to current events. Showing students history and current events through visual means is so much more effective and interesting! I also think the OMG Shakespeare segment of your blog was cool. I have actually never seen that before. I remember Shakespeare being text that I and many of my peers struggled to understand in high school. Having this OMG Shakespeare would have been really helpful to better understand it, especially since we all know all about Emojis! Lastly, I like that your goal as a teacher is not just to use visual literacy in the classroom but to use visual literacy in the classroom that relates to every student. This is so important and i hope to gain the knowledge and resources to be able to do the same!
ReplyDeleteYour blog started out with a great visual and literary explanation of the importance of visual literacy. The layout you used made it easy to see the key reasons visual literacy is important in the classroom. In today’s society, students need to be able to understand and interpret different images. You utilized great images to coincide with your descriptions. The video you posted did a great job of explaining the importance of visual literacy especially in today’s society. Brian Kennedy did a great job explaining that with the use of technology in today’s society visual literacy needs to be integrated into text literacy. He brought up an interesting point that people understand sign language before they learn verbal I didn’t connect sign language with visual literacy at first but it totally is! I really liked the examples you gave of using visually literacy for text in the classroom. I thought the emojis used to help visually explain the different Shakespeare novels was a unique way to incorporate visual literacy into what some might consider classic literacy. I thought that your goals as a future educator were very similar to my own goals. I think that in this changing world, teachers should utilize technology to help create more meaningful lessons. I really enjoyed your blog this week!
